Setu Technologies Inc. (Setu) is a clean technology company based in Victoria. Setu is founded by Dr. Rishi Gupta who has over 20 years of experience in fiber-reinforced concrete development, but more importantly, he has experience in the application of this technology in real-world settings.
Setu uses a patented concrete reinforcement technology to improve the sustainability and resilience of infrastructure. Setu's innovative technology allows the coating of concrete with industrial waste products to produce durable civil infrastructure. Green surface treated fibers (GSTF) which have been patented by Setu Technologies, can be manufactured from 100% recycled plastic waste. The innovative coating on the reinforcement improves the weak Interfacial Transition Zone (ITZ) leading to better bond and long-term durability with the world’s most used construction material "Concrete."

Concrete is inherently brittle and requires reinforcing. The traditional form of steel reinforcement provides localized strengthening; only making the matrix prone to cracking. However, even fibers develop a weak zone called ITZ between its surface and the matrix which leads to poor development of the bonds. In the case of steel, it can get corroded due to ITZ which could lead to billions of dollars of infrastructure repair deficit each year.
Setu's GSTF has industrial waste on its surface that reduces the ITZ resulting in a >12% increase in tensile and >10% in flexural strength of concrete. With the use of Setu’s patented fibers, the infrastructure becomes less prone to cracking and is green owing to longer service life.

A demonstration was completed in March of 2022 at a ready-mix concrete plant. This included the construction of a fiber-reinforced concrete bus pad for BC transit and the District of Saanich. In the long-run Setu is well set to meet the enormous global demand for innovative and low-carbon sustainable materials. The team is also working on a whole bunch of new fibers that will take the infrastructure industry a notch higher.
The ultimate aim of Setu Technologies is to develop a modern green infrastructure technology that can conserve natural resources and help reduce the overall cost of construction and the impacts that infrastructure has on climate change.
